The Story Behind the Trees

Tucked into a steep coastal canyon just north of the Golden Gate, Muir Woods is a living remnant of an ancient world. Before the 19th century, coast redwoods blanketed millions of acres along the California coast, but the logging boom fueled by the California Gold Rush and the rapid growth of San Francisco quickly decimated these primeval forests. By the late 1800s, this specific valley—then known as Redwood Canyon—was one of the very last uncut stands of old-growth redwoods left in the Bay Area, preserved largely because its steep, rugged terrain made it incredibly difficult for loggers to access.

In 1905, recognizing the imminent threat of destruction from a proposed water reservoir that would have flooded the canyon, San Francisco businessman William Kent and his wife, Elizabeth Thacher Kent, purchased 295 acres of the land for $45,000 to protect it. When a local water company attempted to condemn the land anyway, Kent bypassed local politics by donating the acreage directly to the Federal Government. On January 9, 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt declared the area a National Monument using the Antiquities Act. Roosevelt initially proposed naming the park after Kent, but Kent insisted it be named in honor of legendary naturalist John Muir, whose tireless efforts helped birth the modern conservation movement. Today, these resilient giants—some standing over 250 feet tall and crashing through the 1,000-year mark—remain protected, offering a sanctuary of quiet grandeur just minutes from the city.
