TINTIN IN AMERICA (Coloring of the original B&W edition)
"It is in the edition of Thursday, August 27, 1931, of the Petit Vingtième that the young reporter embarks on an ocean liner in Cherbourg to reach America after a stop in England.
While in Tintin in the Land of the Soviets, Hergé denounced Bolshevism, here he criticizes wild capitalism and its host of injustices, embezzlements, and violence. He depicts the expulsion of Native Americans from their lands by the government army at the request of greedy promoters, he stigmatizes the lynching of Black people, and he ridicules the assembly line production of cattle transformed alive into sausages. However, Hergé is not insensitive to the American dream, to the determined energy of progress, and to the magnificent landscapes. A story full of contrasts, sometimes burlesque humor, and of course adventure… and a return to the roots that allows us to see the consolidation of Hergé's talent still in development.
In 1931 and 1932, the 120 black and white plates were published for the first time as a serial in the youth supplement of the Belgian daily Le XXe Siècle before being published in album form in 1932 by the Éditions du Petit "Vingtième". In 1942, Hergé began to revise this story by condensing it into 62 pages colored for release in 1946.
Eighty-nine years after its creation, the Moulinsart editions have completed the colorization of the original version following the already colorized original versions of Tintin in the Land of the Soviets and Tintin in the Congo. The colorization unfolds around the original black areas. It is an adaptation of the first complete version. The colorists have prioritized respect for the power of black and white. It is in this sense that we speak of 'colorization'."
